IRVING, Texas (SMU) – Keena Mays was named co-Conference USA Player of the Week, picking up her second consecutive and fourth weekly award since becoming eligible on Dec. 17 after transferring from Kansas. Conference officials announced the honor after Mays led the Mustangs to a pair of wins, stretching the win streak to 10 games, the second longest in program history. SMU is off to its best start in conference play with a 9-0 C-USA mark, 18-4 overall.

Mays, a guard from Arlington, Texas, scored 29 points, her second total of the season, including two buzzer beaters against UAB as SMU won 94-92 over the league’s best scoring defense at the time. With the Mustangs down three in the first overtime, the conference scoring leader caught the inbound pass, dribbled left and tied the game with three-tenths of a second left. She then hit a jumper at the right elbow with 1.4 seconds left for the game winner.

She grabbed 13 rebounds against the Blazers for her second double-double of the season, and also had four assists and two steals. Mays led the Mustangs in scoring for the 11th time in 14 games with 17 points against Marshall, knocking down four of eight shots from 3-point range. She also had five rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block against the Thundering Herd.

Mays is averaging 20.2 points per game and shooting 43.6 percent from behind the arc, both of which would lead the conference and rank in the top 15 in the country if she met the minimum 75 percent of games played. She would also rank second in C-USA with 4.57 steals per game, fifth with 2.71 steals per game, and sixth in free throw percentage, 75.8. She also picked up her fourth straight College Sports Madness C-USA Player of the Week award, and was named as one of three national players of the week by the publication.

The Mustangs start a two-game road trip at East Carolina Thursday at 6 p.m. CT. SMU, which picked of five votes in this week’s AP Top 25 Poll, returns to Moody Coliseum to host Tulsa on Feb. 21 after playing at Memphis Sunday.
