Mays To Attend WNBA Training Camp

LOS ANGELES (SMU) – SMU senior Keena Mays has been invited by the Los Angeles Sparks to participate in training camp with an opportunity to make the roster. Mays, who set a single-season scoring record at SMU with 691 points as a senior, is one of 15 players competing for 12 roster spots with the Sparks.

The training camp starts April 27 and will include two preseason games during the two-week duration. The Sparks’ current roster includes former No. 1 draft picks Candace Parker (Tennessee – 2008) and Nneka Ogwumike (Stanford – 2012), as well as Louisville’s Antonita Slaughter, a 2014 draft selection.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity the Sparks have given me. Growing up, this is every little girl’s dream, to play in the WNBA,” Mays excitedly stated. “It’s amazing to see my dreams come true. I know it’s going to be a hard and challenging road ahead of me, but I’m ready for it.”

Mays, a 5-9 guard from Mansfield, Texas, was a two-time All-America finalist, two-time first-team all-conference selection, and was named Conference Player of the Year as a junior. During her senior season, she led the American Athletic Conference with 21.6 points per game, and shot a league-best 39.6 percent from behind the arc, finishing with a school-record 88 3-point field goals in 32 games.

She scored 1,115 points in 55 games during her two-year career on the Hilltop, leading SMU to back-to-back WNIT appearances and regular-season conference championship. She made 152 3-pointers, shooting 39.8 percent from behind the arc, and finished with a 40.8 shooting percentage overall at SMU.
