Moreira Named AAC Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – SMU senior center Yanick Moreira was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Junior guard Nic Moore was also selected to The American Weekly Honor Roll. The duo led the Mustangs to a 67-46 win versus UIC on Wednesday and a 62-51 victory at Michigan on Saturday. SMU has won six straight and is now 8-3 on the season.

Moreira averaged 15.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two games and shot 68.8 percent from the field (11 of 16). Moreira scored 15 of his game-high 19 points against Michigan in the second half, leading the Mustangs to their sixth straight. Moreira has averaged 12.9 points and 6.6 rebounds this season and ranks second in the American Athletic Conference in field goal percentage (.633).

Moore averaged 16.5 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds on the week. He shot 64.7 percent from the floor (11-17) and hit 5 of 9 three pointers. He scored 17 points, including 11 of the Mustangs’ first 15 points, in the win at Michigan. This is Moore’s 11th career weekly honor roll appearance and third this season.

The Mustangs close the non-conference schedule by hosting Midwestern State on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. SMU opens American Athletic Conference play against USF in Moody Coliseum on Dec. 31 at 4 p.m.
