Mustangs Fall In Five-Sets To Wichita State

DALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs were just two points away from a win over Wichita State with the fourth set tied 23-23, but it was the Shockers who took the set, and eventually won the match 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-6). Caroline Young continued to put up big numbers offensively, scoring a match-high 20 kills, including two in the fifth set, but Wichita State had four blocks in the decisive set to take the win.

SMU (2-5) took a 2-1 advantage in the match after edging out Wichita State (4-3), 25-23 in the third set, erasing a three-point deficit. Trailing 16-13, the Mustangs scored five-straight points with four kills and a WSU attack error. The Shockers tied the set, which was still tied at 23-23, but Maddie Lozano blasted a kill and Chelsey Feekin mishandled the set for the Shockers on set point, awarding the set to SMU.

The Mustangs dominated the first set, scoring 14 kills and two aces, while forcing the Shockers into six errors. SMU also had two blocks, one by Lozano and one by Carla Armstrong, in the 25-16 first-set victory. SMU hit .474 as a team, committing just one attack error.

The Shockers answered with a 25-18 win in the second set, breaking an 11-11 tie with a five-point run to take a 16-11 lead. The Mustangs weren’t able to get within four points the rest of the set. Wichita State evened the match for a second time in the fourth set, edging out the Mustangs 25-23. SMU led 19-17, but a pair of kills by Sam Sanders evened the score for the Shockers. Wichita State kept the score within one and then scored the final to points to force the fifth set, which the Shockers never trailed in.

Carla Armstrong had 10 kills, and Lozano finished with nine kills and three blocks for the Mustangs. Cailin Bula added eight kills, while Julianne Scheidler had a team-high 14 digs, and Olivia Bailey had 45 assists and eight digs. Courtney Manning had five kills and four blocks, needing just three to reach 500 blocks for her career. Emily Adney led the Shockers with 13 kills, and Ashley Andrade had 12.
