AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) – SMU stumbled out of the gate against New Mexico on Friday night at the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas, losing to New Mexico, 4-1.

The defeat drops SMU to 2-2-0 on the season. New Mexico scored three times in the first 25 minutes of action, receiving goals from Brianna Webster, Rachel Montoya, and Jordan Craig.

The Lobos would carry that lead into halftime and then extend it to four after a 74th-minute goal from Natalie Jenks. SMU freshman Lissi Lonsberry responded with an 81st-minute tally, the first of her collegiate career, but it was too little, too late for the Mustangs.

SMU only had three fewer shots than New Mexico for the game, but poor first half execution doomed the Mustangs.

“We played poorly in the first half,” Head Coach Chris Petrucelli said. “We have to go back and see where we let down and change some things.”

SMU will try to bounce back on Sunday in the final game of the tournament against No. 10 Virginia. The game is slated to start at 11 a.m. CT.
