Mustangs Sweep Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-0 In TCU Invitational

FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – Caroline Young led the Mustangs to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-21) win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in their final match at the TCU Nike Invitational. Young had 18 kills, hitting .350, and three aces, all in the two-point, first-set win. The sophomore was named to the All-Tournament team after reaching new career highs with 23 kills and 18 digs against Army on Saturday morning.

SMU built a 5-1 lead early in the third set, and kept a decisive advantage until taking a 20-15 lead. The Islanders cut the lead down to one, trailing the Mustangs 22-21. Two of Young’s kills bookended a service ace by Julianne Scheidler to seal the win.

Senior transfer Maddie Lozano finished with nine kills and three blocks, and Carla Armstrong and Courtney Manning each added seven kills. Manning also had four blocks to push her career total to 493. Olivia Bailey assisted on 42 of SMU’s 48 kills and also had eight digs.

The Mustangs trailed 16-13 in the first set before going on a 6-1 run, capped off with a kill and pair of aces by Young, giving SMU a 19-17 lead. The Islanders tied the set before SMU scored the final two points to take an early advantage in the match with the 26-24 win. Young scored five kills and three aces to lead the Mustangs.

Young had another five kills in the second set, leading SMU to a 2-0 advantage in the match with a 25-20 victory. Neither team led by more than three points until The Mustangs went on a 5-1 run to take an 18-14 lead. The Islanders came back to cut the lead to one, 19-18, but the Mustangs never gave up the lead, holding on for the win.

The Mustangs host their home opener against Wichita State Thursday at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum in the first round of the SMU Classic, which runs Sept. 6-8.
