The Turkish government has issued an arrest warrant for Oklahoma City Thunder center Enes Kanter, accusing him of being a member of a “terror group”, according to pro-government newspaper Daily Sabah.
A prosecutor in Istanbul opened an investigation into Kanter’s “membership of an armed terrorist organization,” per the Daily Sabah. Kanter, who was born in Switzerland to Turkish parents, previously backed Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen on his Twitter account.
The Turkish government has accused Gulen, who is based in the United States, of organizing a failed coup last July in attempt to oust Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. They have referred to the movement as the “Fethullah Terrorist Organisation,”or FETO.
Gulen has denied the government’s accusation.
Kanter was detained in Romania over the weekend after being informed that his Turkish passport was cancelled. Kanter told reporters on Monday that he would seek American citizenship.
Kanter has compared Ergodan to Adolf Hitler.
On Friday afternoon, Kanter tweeted, “Stand For What You Believe!”
The 25-year-old averaged 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in 72 games with the Thunder in the 2016-17 season
