NHL Announces 2022-23 First and Second All-Star Teams
|NASHVILLE – Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid, who earlier today captured the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP and Ted Lindsay Award for most outstanding player as selected by the NHLPA at the 2023 NHL Awards, heads the list of players voted to the 2022-23 NHL First All-Star Team.
McDavid earned his fifth career berth on the First Team, passing Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby (four) for the most at center among active players.
The only centers in NHL history with as many First Team berths are Wayne Gretzky (eight), Jean Beliveau (six), Phil Esposito (six), Stan Mikita (six) and Mario Lemieux (five).
Flanking McDavid on the First Team front line are David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins on right wing and Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars on left wing. The defensemen are 2022-23 Norris Trophy recipient Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks and Adam Fox of the New York Rangers. The goaltender is this year’s Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark of the Boston Bruins.
Karlsson, like McDavid, has captured his fifth career berth on the First Team, the leader among active defensemen. He is the 11th blueliner all-time voted to the First Team at least five times. Fox and Pastrnak have earned their second career First Team selection, while Robertson and Ullmark are making their First Team debut.
Earning Second Team honors at center behind McDavid is Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl, marking the first time in 62 years that players from the same team have swept the top two places at center. Montreal’s Jean Beliveau (First Team) and Henri Richard (Second Team) were the last, in 1960-61.
Joining Draisaitl on the Second Team forward line are Matthew Tkachuk of the Florida Panthers on right wing and Artemi Panarin of the New York Rangers on left wing, both voted to the Second Team for the second time.
Rounding out the lineup are three players making their debut on the Second Team: defensemen Hampus Lindholm of the Boston Bruins and Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, and goaltender Ilya Sorokin of the New York Islanders.
Voting for the All-Star Team was conducted among representatives of the Professional Hockey Writers Association after the conclusion of the regular season.
The complete list of NHL First and Second All-Star Team rosters by season since their inception in 1930-31 is available at the NHL’s official records site, Records.NHL.com.
The site also lists all-time and active leaders voted to the First and Second Teams by position.
