No. 10 SMU Equestrian Defeats No. 3 Texas A&M

DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 10 SMU equestrian team opened the spring season by defeating No. 3 Texas A&M, 6-4, Friday morning at BuckBranch Farm. The Mustangs took the meet by winning the final point as sophomore Julianna Fischer earned an 80-79 win on the flat. Fischer also picked up a point with a 76-71 victory over fences. With the win, the Mustangs move to 6-4 on the season.

“This was a big win for our team to start the semester,” head coach Haley Schoolfield said. “It was a nail biter and a really hard-fought win. I’m proud of how Julianna handled the pressure; she put in a great ride and brought home the win. Our team has really worked hard and pushed each other, and you could definitely see that today.”

SMU opened the day with a 4-1 advantage in equitation over fences. All-American Jordyn Pettersen won a point with her 73-64 win. Sophomore Renick Townsend and freshman Emma Roberts also scored for the Mustangs with wins of 77-72 and 78-60, respectively.

SMU lost the flat, 2-3, but Roberts earned her second point of the competition with an 83-82 win, assuring the Mustangs at least a tie against the Aggies. Fischer secured the win for SMU wither her 80-78 showing.

The Mustangs compete in the WEF Invitational Feb. 10 in Wellington, Fla. SMU returns to BuckBranch on March 2 to square off against South Dakota State.
