No. 15 Baylor Softball Defeats Mean Green In 11

Waco, Texas (3/14/12) – Kayce Walker knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give No. 15 Baylor a 2-1 victory against North Texas on Wednesday night at Getterman Stadium.

The Mean Green falls to 8-14, while Baylor improves to 19-5. North Texas is 0-3 against the Bears this season. All three games have been determined by one run. Four of the Mean Green’s last six games have gone to extra innings. North Texas is 1-3 in those games.

North Texas took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and held onto it until Baylor tied the game in the sixth inning. Two singles allowed the game-winning run to score in the 11th.

Baylor led off the bottom of the 11th with a single to left by Holly Holl. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to second and wild pitch moved Holl to third. Walker hit a grounder to the shortstop, beating out the throw and allowing the runner to score the game-winning run.

Brittany Simmons (5-5) pitched a season-high 10.2 innings. She allowed two runs off 10 hits, striking out five. She held the Bears scoreless for 5.2 innings, allowing just three hits. The junior worked out of jams in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, allowing one run off five hits.

The Mean Green plated the first run of the game in the second inning off a bases-loaded walk. Maddelyn Fraley led off with a walk and later scored after pinch hitter Jordan Terry drew the third bases on balls of the inning. After a Baylor pitching change, Lesley Hirsch lined out to left field with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Bears tied the game in the sixth with a single to left field that scored the runner from second. With two outs on the scoreboard, Baylor posted three consecutive singles before a flyout ended the inning.

Hirsch led off the eighth with a single to third base. Brooke Foster advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt, and Fraley was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second. Pinch-hitter Jackie Miller drew a walk to load the bases for Caitlin Grimes, who flied out to center field to end the inning.

Baylor loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs, but Simmons struck out the pinch hitter to end the threat.

Baylor outhit the Mean Green, 10-3.

North Texas returns to action on Saturday, March 17 when it faces Middle Tennessee at home at 2 p.m.
