DENTON,Texas – North Texas head coach Tony Benford added to his 2014-15 signing class with the addition of First-Team All-Region VIII selection Carrington Ward.

Ward currently ranks 30th in the NJCAA with 21.0 points per game, and is shooting 54.5 percent from the floor as a sophomore at San Jacinto College. He’s also pouring in 3.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game.

“Carrington is a scoring wing that is one of the best 3-point shooters in the country,” said Benford. “With us losing three quality guards in Brandan Walton, Alzee Williams and Vertrail Vaughns after the season, we felt like we needed to bring in some immediate help. Carrington fits the bill perfectly because he’s a tough, character kid that fits the style of basketball we like to play.”

The Philadelphia native was a standout at Palm Beach State last season, where he averaged 13.0 points on 49.7 percent shooting as a freshman. Ward, who was a First-Team All-Southern Conference selection in Region VIII, was a 47.6 percent shooter from 3-point (50-105), which ranked eighth in the

NJCAA nationwide in 2012-13.

Ward will have two years of eligibility at North Texas after starting 31 games last year while averaging 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He scored at least 20 points five times in 2012-13, including season-highs of 22 points in back-to-back games in Nov. In perhaps his best game of the year, Ward tallied 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and notched 10 assists in an 84-50 win over Miami Dade College.
