DENTON, Texas — Middle Tennessee used a 21-3 run and held off a late Mean Green rally to overtake the North Texas men’s basketball team and propel the visitors to a 70-63 victory on Saturday night at the Super Pit.

North Texas falls to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in Conference USA league play, while Middle Tennessee improves to 13-7 and 3-2 in the conference.

“We have to get back to doing the little things,” said North Texas head coach Tony Benford. “We have to take care of the basketball and make sure we continue to execute off the half court. We have to get stops when teams go on runs. I always tell the guys that college basketball is a game of runs. They went on a run, we on a run, but they then closed it out.”

Middle Tennessee led by as many as 13 points in the second half, but North Texas used a late run to come within four points of the lead in the final minutes of the game. The Blue Raiders hit seven free throws in the final minute to hold onto the conference win.

The four-point halftime lead by the Mean Green did not last long. Middle Tennessee

North Texas cut the lead to four points twice in the final two minutes but was unable to get any closer. The Mean Green was held to 35 percent shooting in the second stanza after posting a 52.2 field-goal percentage in the opening period.

We just have to finish games,” said Benford. “We just need to learn how to close well.”
