Simpson Named C-USA Player Of The Week

IRVING, Texas (SMU) – SMU sophomore Akil Simpson collected her second Conference USA Player of the Week honor after averaging 21.0 points per game, including a career-high 25 points against Tulane, league officials announced Monday.

The forward from Duncanville, Texas scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds against Houston to lead SMU to the program’s 550th win all-time, completing the season-sweep of the Cougars. She followed the Thursday night performance with her sixth double-double of the season, seventh of her career, grabbing 10 rebounds at Tulane.

Simpson shot 61.5-percent from the field in the two conference games, connecting on 16-of-26 attempts, and made 10-of-11 shots from the free throw line. She also had four assists and two steals during the week. Simpson was also named C-USA Player of the Week on Jan. 16.

The Mustangs play three of their next four games at home, starting with a Thursday night matchup against Memphis at 7 p.m. Sunday’s game against Southern Miss will air live on CBS SN. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Moody Coliseum.
