Simpson Named To All-Conference USA Team

IRVING, Texas (SMU) – Akil Simpson was named to the Conference USA All-Conference Team by the league coaches, conference officials announced Sunday. The sophomore forward was voted to the second team after leading the Mustangs in scoring and rebounds this season.

Simpson, a native of Duncanville, Texas, averaged 10.6 points per game, 12th in Conference USA, and scored 11.8 points per game in conference games. She pulled down a team-high 7.3 rebounds and finished the regular season with seven double-doubles.

In three games, Simpson scored at least 20 points in three games this season, including a career-high 25 points at Tulane. She grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds against Houston, and had at least 10 rebounds nine times. She has scored 452 points in two seasons with the Mustangs, and grabbed 337 rebounds.

The powerful post player also leads the team with 82 free throws made, shooting 65.1 percent, and has 45 steals and 44 assists. She was second in the conference, shooting 52.8 percent from the field, and led the league, shooting 54.7 percent in conference games.

Simpson was also named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team last season. The Mustangs will open the Conference USA Championship on Wednesday in Memphis, Tenn., against Marshall at 1:30 p.m.
