SMU Basketball Wins Season Opener

DALLAS (SMU) — Robert Nyakundi had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the SMU Mustangs to a 78-49 victory over McMurry at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs got 12 points from London Giles and 11 from Jalen Jones in their SMU debuts at Moody Coliseum.

SMU jumped out to a 21-5 lead in the first 10 minutes, hitting five of its first seven 3-point attempts. The Mustangs led 43-27 at halftime then started the second half on a 16-6 run as they cruised to victory. All 12 Mustangs saw the floor en route to the season-opening triumph.

SMU dominated the game from the perimeter, hitting 13-of-31 (.419) from 3-point range. Eight different Mustangs hit a 3-pointer with Rodney Clinkscales hitting 3-of-5. Jones hit 2-of-3 and Aliaksei Patsevich connected on 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.

SMU shot 43.9 percent for the game while holding McMurry to just 29.6 percent from the field.

The Mustangs face Colorado State in the West Regional of the Dick’s Sports Goods NIT Season Tip-Off on Monday at Stanford. SMU will then face Fresno State or Stanford in the second round on Tuesday.
