DALLAS (AP) — Pat Swilling Jr. hit a 3-pointer with 3.8 seconds left to give Danny Manning and Tulsa a 48-47 victory over Larry Brown and SMU in just the second coaching matchup of an NCAA-winning coach and the Final Four’s most outstanding player.

The shot by Swilling Jr., son of former NFL linebacker Pat Swilling, thwarted a huge second-half comeback from SMU. The Mustangs (10-6) trailed 34-17 at halftime before outscoring the Hurricane 29-8 for a 46-42 lead. SMU held Tulsa to just 23.1% shooting in the second half.

Tulsa (9-6) pulled within a point on a 3-pointer by Scottie Haralson, and Swilling Jr. hit the winning shot after SMU fouled twice with the Hurricane trying to get loose for an open look.

Manning, the eighth-leading scorer in NCAA history, was the star on Kansas’ 1988 national championship team. Brown is the only coach to win NCAA and NBA titles.

The game was the Conference USA opener for both teams.

SMU now hits the road to take on Houston Wednesday, Jan. 9. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
