SMU Defeats UCF

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s team opened American Athletic Conference play with a 5-2 victory against UCF Saturday at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs have won three straight matches and improve to 9-2 on the season, while the Knights fell to 10-2. SMU moves to 7-3 all-time against UCF and have won three of the last four in the series.

SMU took the doubles point after winning the No. 3 and No. 2 matches. In No. 3 doubles, Mary Wright and Macie Elliott defeated Elizabeth Bagerbaseh and Nicole Jimenez. The Mustangs duo of Sarai Monarrez Yesaki and Ana Perez-Lopez clinched the point after their 6-4 win against Natalia Serrano and Emilia Granstrom to remain undefeated in doubles play (6-0).

In singles play, the Mustangs extended their lead to 3-0 with wins in the No. 6 and No. 1 slots. Wright picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win against Jimenez, while Liza Buss defeated Serrano, 6-3, 6-0.

UCF got its first win in No. 3 singles, but SMU clinched the match victory on court 2 with Monarrez Yesaki getting a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win against Monica Matias. Dasha Sharapova continued her impressive start to the season as she moved to 10-1 in duals after her 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win against Cortney Cesarini.
