SMU Equestrian Defeats Delaware State

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU equestrian team opened the season with an 8-4 defeat of Delaware State Thursday afternoon at BuckBranch Farm. The Mustangs won the raw score 785-768.

“We had a great day and were thrilled to host a great team in DSU,” head coach Haley Schoolfield said. “I’m very pleased with our freshmen and veterans alike, and Coach Burton did an outstanding job prepping our flat riders. The team had strong rides but we need to keep working as we look to Kansas State next week.”

SMU opened the meet with a dominating 5-1 performance in equitation over fences. Sophomore All-American Emma Roberts earned MVP honors with her 83-72 victory over Alyssa Berfield. Sophomore Kendall Skreden edged Heather Hotz, 80-79, to earn a point for the Mustangs. Junior Julianna Fischer claimed her first victory of the season as she defeated Jordan Odle 82-68. Freshman Alex Butterworth had an impressive collegiate debut, snagging an 81-80 win over Tiffany Lee. Junior Ramsay Hanson also picked up a win, defeating Carlin Savage 82-79.

The teams split the flat, 3-3. Sophomore Rachel Reid claimed a 68-60 win over Lee. Freshman Paulena Johnson and junior Renick Townsend also scored for the Mustangs with wins of 53-0 and 64-59, respectively.

The Mustangs travel to Manhattan, Kan., for two meets next week as they take on Kansas State on Friday and Tennessee-Martin on Saturday. The Mustangs defeated UTM in the first round of the NCEA Championships last season and were eventually eliminated by KSU.
