SMU Golfer Wins AAC Championship

PALM COAST, Fla. (SMU) -Sophomore Jenny Haglund shot a one-under 71 for the second-consecutive day to claim the 2014 American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship on Tuesday at the Hammock Beach Ocean Course. Haglund’s two-over 218 led the Mustangs to a 64-over 928, good for a third-place team finish at the first American Championship.

Haglund’s individual conference title is the first since Barbara Blackwell won for the second time in three years in 1992, claiming the Southwest Conference title in San Antonio. The tournament victory is the first of the sophomore’s collegiate career. Haglund finished the final two rounds of the tournament with six birdies and four bogeys on the final 36 holes.

The Karlstad, Sweden, native entered the final round with a three-stroke lead, but that cushion was erased by Louisville’s Emily Haas as the duo finished the 11th hole. Haglund would take a stroke advantage after birdieing the par-3 12th, and would pick up two more strokes by birdieing the par-4 13th to take back a three stroke lead. The Mustang sophomore would par out the final three holes, and would go onto win the tournament by five strokes. Tuesday’s round was Haglund’s 11th at par or better this season, and the 16th of her career.

“It was a lot of fun out there today,” Haglund said. “I stayed patient out there, and just played my game. It means a lot to me to win this; it meant a lot for me to be celebrate with my teammates.”

Senior Maria Elena Villamil and sophomore Alexandra Rossi finished the tournament in a tie for 14th at 19-over. Villamil was second on the team on Tuesday, carding a five-over 77, while Rossi rounded out her second conference championship appearance with an eight-over 80.

Junior Jennifer Park turned in her best round of the tournament, recording a seven-over 79 on the final 18 holes. Park would go on to finish the week in 25th.

No. 38 Louisville erased a four-stroke deficit to win the team title by a stroke on the final day over No. 18 UCF.

The Mustangs will now await the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Selection Show that will air on the Golf Channel on April 28 at 5 p.m. CT.
