SMU M-Tennis On Five Match Win Streak

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s tennis team picked up wins against Abilene Christian and Xavier on Thursday at Turpin Tennis Center. The Mustangs defeated the Wildcats 6-1 before downing the Musketeers 5-2. With the victories, SMU has won five consecutive meets and is now 8-5 on the season.

SMU opened the day by winning two sets in doubles to earn the doubles point against ACU. Joseph Hattrup and Tobias Flood combined to defeat the duo of Bryan Joiner and Nick Plum 8-5, while Mischa Nowicki and Gaston Cuadranti downed the pairing of Eldad Campbell and John Strahl 8-6. Robert Sajovich and Adham el-Effendi lost 8-6 to Hans Hoch and Jake Hendrie in the No. 1 spot.

In singles play, Cuadranti knocked off Hoch 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the No.1 position, while el-Effendi downed Campbell 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. Nowicki turned in a solid performance as he beat Hendrie 6-1, 6-2. Also picking up wins for the Mustangs were Sajovich, who defeated Alfredo Desiati 6-1, 6-4, and Hattrup, who downed Joiner 4-6, 7-6, 10-8. SMU’s only loss came as Plum beat Flood 7-6, 1-6, 10-8.

Xavier jumped out to a 1-0 lead on SMU after earning the doubles point. Patrick Bandy and Brian Starr defeated Sajovitch and el-Effendi 8-3, while Hattrup and Flood fell to Bobby Deye and Jimmy Roebker 8-5.

The Mustangs had a strong showing in singles play however, winning five of the six matches. el-Effendi downed Deye 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 in the No. 1 spot. The Mustangs received dominating performances from Nowicki, who won in the No. 2 position 6-2, 6-1 over Roebker, and Flood, who downed Starr 7-5, 6-3. Also picking up wins were Bryan Griffin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Brandon MacDonald, and Sajovitch, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Mei. Hattrup was the only loss for the Mustangs, falling to Bandy 7-6, 6-4.

The Mustangs host Columbia on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Turpin Tennis Center.
