SMU M-Tennis Sweeps Weekend Matches

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s tennis team won both of its matches over the weekend, defeating UTSA 4-3 and downing conference rival Memphis 5-2. With the wins, the Mustangs move to 5-5 on the season.

“We had a great team weekend, winning two hard-fought matches against good tennis teams,” head coach Carl Neufeld said. “We had a strong win against Memphis, who has had some quality wins already this year. Four of our guys played to their personal best Sunday, making it a very outstanding day. I’m excited about our progress. Our doubles has progressed; winning our past three doubles matches again tough squads. That really bodes well for the remainder of the season.”

SMU opened the weekend by earning the doubles point against UTSA on Saturday. Joseph Hattup and Tobias Flood combined to defeat Yannick Junger and Tyler Brown 8-5, while Robert Sajovich and Adham el-Effendi downed the duo of Max Stratmann and Kolby Kilgo 8-6. Bryan Griffin and Gaston Cuadranti fell to Daniel Moreiras and Martin Ayala 8-4 in the No. 1 spot.

In singles play, David Costa beat Martin Ayala 6-4, 6-2 in the top spot. SMU also picked up wins from Cuadranti and Sajovich who defeated Junger (6-1, 6-4) and Daniel Moser (6-2, 6-2), respectively. Griffin was defeated by Brown 6-0, 6-2, while Flood lost to Moreiras 6-4, 6-3. Nowicki pushed his set to three games before falling to Stratmann 7-5, 6-7, 10-6.

On Sunday, the Mustangs once again turned in a strong performance to earn the doubles point. Flood and Hattrup teamed up to beat Joe Salisbury and David O’Hare 8-5. Sajovich and el-Effendi also picked up a win, defeating the duo of John Taylor and Leon Naseman 8-6. In the top spot, Artem Baradach and Cudranti lost 8-6 to David Henry and Jordan Smith.

Singles play was hard fought as only two players swept sets. Cuadranti beat Nasemann 6-3, 6-4, and Sajovich downed Taylor 6-2, 6-1. The Mustangs also picked up wins from Costa, who edged Salisbury 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and Nowicki, who defeated Henry 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. el-Effendi was narrowly defeated by Johnny Grimal 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), while No. 49 Baradach fell to O’Hare 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

SMU hosts conference adversary Southern Miss on Tuesday at Turpin Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
