The SMU Mustangs improve to 5-1 for the first time since 1986 with a 38-17 victory  over the UCF Knights.  It is the first time SMU has defeated the Knights, following 3 straight losses, including a 17-7 loss in the 2010 C-USA Conference Championship game.

Going into the game against SMU, the Knights defense had not allowed a drive longer than 38 yards this season.  SMU made 6 drives longer than that on Saturday.

SMU quarterback J.J. McDermott had a career-high 358 yards passing, completing 20 of 31 attempts.  It is the 3rd straight 300-yard game for McDermott.

Running back Zach Line gained 82 yards on 16 carries and scored 2 touchdowns.

Wide receiver Cole Beasley returned from injury to lead the team with 10 catches for 134 yards.  Darius Johnson added 4 receptions for 73 yards.  The longest pass play of the day went to Der’rikk Thompson for a 72 yard touchdown.

Richard Crawford tied an SMU record with a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown.

SMU has now scored 28 or more points in 5 straight games, all wins.  The 5-game winning streak is SMU’s longest since 1997.  The Mustangs are 12-3 at home dating back to the start of the 2009 season.
