SMU Rally Falls Short At Houston

HOUSTON (AP) — Joseph Young scored 27 points and Houston held off a second-half rally for a 62-59 victory over SMU on Saturday night. Robert Nyakundi led the Mustangs with 24 points, including 6-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc.

Young connected on four 3-pointers for the Cougars (13-14, 5-9 Conference USA).

Jonathon Simmons scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Houston, and TaShawn Thomas scored 10 points. Jimmie Jones sparked the defense with four steals.

In addition to his 24 point showing, Nyakundi also recorded three steals for SMU (12-17, 3-11). Jeremiah Samarrippas had nine assists and Shawn Williams had seven rebounds.

Houston had a 22-6 scoring advantage in the paint but SMU had a 21-16 scoring margin off turnovers and 15-5 off the bench. The Mustangs forced 16 Cougar turnovers on the night.

SMU is back on the road for its next game Wednesday, Feb. 29 when the Mustangs travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on Southern Miss. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
