SMU Routs Northwestern State

The SMU Mustangs had no trouble handling Northwestern State with a 40-7 win at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.  SMU improves to 11-3 in it’s last 14 regular-season home games.

Zach Line led the way with a Conference USA and SMU record 5 rushing touchdowns.  Line rushed for 85 yards on 16 carries.

SMU passed for 416 yards, led by JJ McDermott, who was 19 of 35 for 278 yards.  Kyle Padron also saw action, going 7 of 16 for 138 yards.  Neither SMU quarterback was sacked in the game.

Cole Beasley led the SMU receivers with a career-high 11 catches for 171 yards.  Beasley’s 197 career receptions rank 3rd in SMU history.  Darius Johnson added 8 receptions for 127 yards, his first 100-yard game of the season.

The SMU defense did not allow an offensive touchdown for the first time since 2006.  The defense held NSU to just 126 total yards, the fewest allowed since 2003.

Defensive end Margus Hunt blocked a field goal, his 8th career blocked FG, which ties the NCAA record.  Hunt is 3rd in NCAA history with 14 career blocked kicks.

SMU travels to C-USA foe Memphis next week.
