SMU Shuts Out UTEP

The SMU Mustangs won their 4th straight conference opener with a 17-0 victory over UTEP in El Paso.  It is the 2nd shutout of the season for the Mustangs, and the 1st time UTEP has been shutout at home since 1996, also by SMU.

Linebacker Ja’Gared Davis returned an interception for a touchdown late in the 1st half.  Davis has now returned 3 fumbles, a blocked field goal, and an interception for touchdowns in his career.  

Randall Joyner added 2 interceptions for SMU, and added a career-high 14 tackles.

Margus Hunt blocked a field goal in the 3rd quarter, the 10th block of his career, which extends his NCAA record.  Hunt also has 7 blocked extra points for a total of 17 career blocked kicks.

Running back Zach Line entered the game 5th in the NCAA for career yards.  Line added 84 yards on 25 carries.

Quarterback Garrett Gilbert completed 22 of 44 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown.  Jeremy Johnson led the receivers with 8 catches for 76 yards.

SMU stays on the road for a conference matchup against Tulane in New Orleans next Saturday.
