DALLAS (SMU) – A second half goal from sophomore Alfred Koroma proved to be the match winner as the SMU men’s soccer team went on to defeat Hartwick, 2-1, in the Jason’s Deli SMU Invitational on Friday evening at Westcott Field. The victory was the Mustangs’ first in 2013 and improved their record to 1-4, while the Hawks fell to 0-3-2 on the season with the loss.

SMU owned the first frame with a 5-0 advantage in shots. The one that counted came from junior Andrew Morales in the 31st minute off a cross from freshman Deshawon Nembhard. Nembhard brought the ball down the left side of the field to the touch line and found Morales at the top of the 18-yard box for the lead.

The Mustangs picked up an insurance goal in a second half that saw a more balanced offensive attack from the teams. Koroma’s goal in the 50th minute came off a deflection from an initial shot from Nembhard. Sophomore John Lujano was also credited with an assist on the play.

SMU outshot the Hawks 11-7, and had the 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Koroma led the Mustangs offensively with the aforementioned goal as well as three other shots on goal. Morales and sophomore Will Smith also tallied shots on frame.

Senior Jaime Ibarra registered two saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday when they host UMKC in the final game of the Invitational. UMKC tied No. 13 Tulsa, 1-1, in its first match at Westcott Field. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and live stats and video can be found at SMUMustangs.com.
