DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Houston Baptist in its final exhibition contest on Saturday evening at Westcott Field.

Senior Juan Castillo and freshman Stanton Garcia provided the offense for SMU, while senior Jaime Ibarra, sophomore Oshick Shams and freshman Michael Nelson split time in the net.

The Mustangs struck first, as they did in their first exhibition contest with Oral Roberts, off a diving header from Castillo in the 15th minute. Castillo perfectly timed a run through the middle of the box and got on the end of the cross from junior Damian Rosales.

Houston Baptist scored the equalizer in the 60th minute when junior Gustavo Alvarado connected from six yards off a throw from sophomore Thilo Borgmann. SMU didn’t waste any time regaining the lead off a header from Garcia off a corner kick from junior Andrew Morales.

The Huskies got the last word with a header from senior John McDuffe in the 81st minute off a free kick to knot up the score.

SMU begins regular season action on Friday when it travels to the IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington, Ind., and clashes with NSCAA preseason No. 1 Indiana. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT. The Mustangs will also face No. 7 Notre Dame on Sunday at the Classic.
