DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team opened up the SMU Invitational with a 1-0 setback at the hands of Missouri State on Friday evening at Westcott Field. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 1-3-0 on the season, while the Bears improved to 2-1-1.

“I thought that for parts of the game we did well and fought hard,” Head Coach Tim McClements said. “Missouri State did a good job of disrupting play, but I think the bottom line is we didn’t generate enough quality chances on goal.”

The lone goal of the match came in the 22nd minute from the Bears’ Zach Wood for his first goal of the season. Wood controlled a feed from Andrew Turner and was able to chip the ball over SMU goalkeeper Michael Nelson from just outside the 18-yard box.

The Mustangs received chances from freshman Mauro Cichero, who registered four shots in the match, and senior Andrew Morales and junior Idrissa Camara who had two apiece. The Ponies’ last shot came from sophomore Marco Carrizales for a total of nine. MSU was able to tally four shots, including only one in the second frame to SMU’s five.

“I think we were able to get on the ball a lot and had some nice ball movement, but hats off to them they fought hard and were able to get a goal and we weren’t,” McClements added.

Nelson had a pair of saves for SMU in 90 minutes of action.

The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday when they host Stony Brook for the final match of the SMU Invitational Presented by Jason’s Deli and DoubleTree Hotel. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and live stats and video will be available on SMUMustangs.com. Stony Brook fell, 1-0, to American Athletic Conference member Memphis in the first match of Friday’s doubleheader.
