SMU Soccer Falls To UAB

DALLAS (SMU) – The No. 15 SMU men’s soccer team was defeated by UAB, 1-0, Wednesday night at Westcott Field. With the loss, the Mustangs are now 9-5-1 on the season and hold a 3-2-1 mark in C-USA. The Blazers improve to 11-3-2 overall and 5-1-0 in league play.

UAB’s Darion Copeland scored the game’s lone goal in the 39th minute. Following a Blazer corner kick, the ball bounced around in the box before Copeland headed it off of the left post and in.

SMU had several scoring opportunities, many missing by just inches. Sophomore Robbie Derschang hit a header off of the crossbar following an SMU free kick in the 13th minute. In the 59th minute, reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week Diogo de Almeida ran down the left side firing a shot off of the left post. Senior Arthur Ivo also had a quality chance when he set up for a free kick from 19 yards out in the 80th minute, but he too hit the crossbar.

Mustang goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra had another solid performance in goal, making six saves on the night. de Almeida also saved a goal with his team save on the line in the 84th minute.

SMU plays its last road game of the season at Kentucky on Oct. 30 at 11 a.m.
