SMU Soccer Loses In Memphis

MEMPHIS (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to American Athletic Conference opponent Memphis on Wednesday evening at Mike Rose Field. The loss dropped the Mustangs to 2-2-2 in conference play, while the Tigers improved to 3-4 in league action.

SMU (3-9-2) got the scoring started in the 16th minute as junior Andrew Morales was assisted by sophomores Eddie Puskarich and Will Smith on a shot inside the six-yard box. The Mustangs held that lead until the 38th minute when the Tigers’ (9-6-1) Mark Sherrod scored a pair of goals in just over a minute’s time, off a header and a penalty kick, to take a 2-1 advantage into the locker room.

The Mustangs wasted little time finding the equalizer as Memphis was whistled for an infraction of its own inside the 18-yard box. Freshman Deshawon Nembhard was taken down on his way to goal and sophomore Alfred Koroma stepped up to the spot and found the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The match winner for the Tigers came in the 59th minute as Jordan Klipsch connected on a loose ball in the box following a corner. Memphis finished with a slight 6-5 advantage in corners after leading the Mustangs in that category, 5-0, at one point in the match.

SMU outshot the Tigers, 14-10, but Memphis held the narrow 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

Koroma had a pair of shots on frame, while Morales, Nembhard and junior Damian Rosales each added one. Senior Jaime Ibarra registered three saves.

The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday when they travel to South Florida to take on the Bulls in American action. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT. Live stats and video links are available at SMUMustangs.com.
