SMU Soccer Rolls Past Oakland 4-1

TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team defeated Oakland 4-1 in the Hurricane Classic on Friday night. Ian Kalis, Damian Rosales, Zach Barnes and Tyler Engel all scored for the Mustangs. SMU is now 2-2 on the season, while Oakland falls to 0-3-1.

“When you’re going into the weekend and you know you’re playing the No. 3 team in the country, it can be tough, but our guys showed a lot of composure tonight,” head coach Tim McClements said. “It was a good performance top to bottom by the entire team. We got a chance to use a lot of players, which was good to look at so many guys in a competitive environment. We played hard and got a great win.”

Kalis opened the scoring in the 29th minute with his first goal of the season. Arthur Ivo took a corner kick and Kalis found the ball in the box, heading it in for a 1-0 lead.

Rosales, a redshirt freshman, doubled the score in the 51st minute as he received a cross from Ivo and put the ball into the lower left corner of the net. The tally was Rosales’ first goal as a Mustang.

Barnes added insurance for the Mustangs when he netted his first goal of the season in the 68th minute. Barnes scored off of a cross from Engel as Barnes buried the ball into the left corner.

Engel added a goal of his own in the 80th minute to put the Mustangs up 4-1. The redshirt sophomore scored from eight yards out after senior Joe Cooper flicked the ball on in the box.

Sophomore Jaime Ibarra made his third consecutive start in goal for SMU. He made three saves before being relieved by freshman keeper Devin Cook in the 74th minute.

Oakland’s lone goal came on a penalty kick in the 77th minute.

SMU continues play in the Hurricane Classic when the Mustangs play No. 3 Connecticut on Sunday at 11 a.m.
