SMU Soccer Tops Dartmouth 2-1 In Overtime

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team defeated Dartmouth 2-1 in overtime during day one action of the SMU Classic Presented by Jason’s Deli Friday night at Westcott Field. Sophomores Robbie Derschang and Juan Castillo scored for the Mustangs. SMU improves to 3-3 on the season, while Dartmouth is now 1-2-2.

SMU opened the scoring early as Derschang tallied his first goal of the year in the third minute. Senior Arthur Ivo sent a cross to the top left corner of the box for Derschang who sent the ball just inside the far post. The helper was Ivo’s team-leading sixth point of the year.

Dartmouth scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute when Aaron Gaide scored from 16 yards out. Sophomore keeper Jaime Ibarra made the initial save on Kevin Dzierzawski but was unable to make the stop on Gaide.

After a scoreless second half, Castillo netted the overtime game-winner in the 93rd minute. Following a Dartmouth foul, senior captain Adam Still took a free kick from midfield sending the ball in to the box to freshman Aaron Simmons who headed it on to Castillo. Castillo took a fired the ball home from eight yards out.

Ibarra turned in another solid performance in goal tonight, making several diving saves en route to his third victory of the season.

In opening tournament action, Washington downed Tulsa 1-0 in overtime after a lightning delay. Washington holds a 3-0-2 mark this year, while Tulsa is now 3-3.

The Mustangs host the conclusion of the SMU Classic Sunday at Westcott Field. Dartmouth takes on Tulsa at noon, while SMU hosts Washington at 7 p.m.
