SMU Swim Completes Day Three Of C-USA Championship

HOUSTON (SMU) – The SMU women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams are each in second place with one day of competition remaining in the Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championship.

Junior Therese Svendsen won the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 52.64, which set a meet record and earned her an NCAA B qualifying time.

Senior captain Audra Egenolf won the one-meter diving event with a score of 312.80.

The Mustangs earned valuable points as the women swept the 100-yard butterfly. Genny Konicke won the event (52.80), while Denisa Smolenova (54.52) and Monika Babok (54.73) finished second and third, respectively. Konicke and Smolenova both swam NCAA B consideration times.

SMU turned in an impressive performance in the 200-yard freestyle as Nina Rangelova won the event in 1:46.63, and Alice McCall placed third, touching the wall in 1:49.19. Both times are NCAA B times.

Junior Raminta Dvariskyte earned another win for the Mustangs, taking top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke with an NCAA B time of 1:02.24.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Emily Vavourakis, Babok, Konicke and Smolenova earned a first place finish with an NCAA B time of 1:31.84.

The men earned three NCAA B qualifying times in the 100-yard breaststroke. Tom Cole won the event in 53.44, while Matthew Napier-Jameson took second (54.94) and Julian Fletcher placed fourth (54.98).

SMU also earned a top two finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Mindaugas Sadauskas came in first, touching the wall in 47.93, while Braeden Newton earned runner-up honors with a time of 50.01. Sadauskas’ time earned him NCAA B consideration.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Matt Roney won the event with an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:37.93. Junior Blaz Korosec came in third, touching the wall in 1:38.37.

David Larsson finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (48.81), while Jake Stieb took third in the 400-yard IM (4:00.02).

Richard Cornelius placed third in the three-meter diving event with a score of 308.30.

The 200-yard freestyle relay earned a second place finish as Sadauskas, Larsson, Greg Doughty and Korosec combined for an NCAA B time of 1:20.28.
