SMU VB: Manning Sets Blocks Record In 3-1 Win At Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (SMU) – Dana Powell blasted 25 kills and added 10 digs for her 18th double-double of the season to lead SMU to a 3-1 victory (25-21, 17-25, 25-18, 25-11) at Houston Friday night. With the win, SMU improved to 13-15 on the season with the series sweep of the Cougars and 9-7 in Conference USA, while Houston fell to 17-9, 10-6 in C-USA.

Courtney Manning recorded 10 blocks, increasing her season total to 164, breaking her own single-season record of 162 as a sophomore. Kelli Becerra added a double-double, as well, posting 20 assists and 16 digs, and Sidney Stewart had a match-high 20 digs.

Leading 2-1 in the match, the Mustangs increased their two-point lead to six with a 4-0 run to take a 13-7 in the fourth set. From there, SMU out-scored Houston 12-4 to close out the match. The Mustangs took control of the match in the third, breaking a 1-1 tie with a 25-18 victory. SMU trailed by one midway through the set, 12-11, but put together a 6-0 run for a 17-12 lead. Houston never got within four points the rest of the set.

The Mustangs opened the match trailing 4-1 in the first set, but took the lead back 7-6. With the set still in the balance late in the set, SMU out-scored the Cougars 5-2 down the stretch to take the early lead in the match with a 25-21 win. Houston answered in the second set, claiming a 25-17 win. The Mustangs were down just one point, 16-15, but only managed two more in the set as the Cougars evened the match 1-1.

SMU will complete its final road trip of the season at Rice Sunday at 2 p.m. The Mustangs close out the regular season with a three-match homestand starting with UTEP on Nov. 18 in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m.
