SMU Volleyball Defeats Tulsa
|TULSA, Okla. (SMU)— The SMU volleyball team earned its 22nd win of the season with a 3-0 victory at Tulsa Wednesday night. The Mustangs improved to 22-7 and 15-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Golden Hurricane fell to 18-11 and 7-10 in The American.
The Mustangs completed their fourth straight sweep and 14th of the season with a 25-22 win in the third set. Tulsa tied the match, 18-18, late in the third set, but a 7-4 run gave the Mustangs the lead and the win.
Katie Hegarty recorded a team-high 14 kills to score the match high, while Lauren Mills and Janelle Giordanoeach added eight kills. Kristen Stehling scored seven kills and Brittany Adams posted six. Morgan Heise had 18 digs, while Montana Watts recorded 16. Mills also added 10 digs and Kendall Patterson had 36 assists.
With a seven-point lead, 20-13, SMU went on a 5-3 run, en route to a 25-16 win in the first set. Hegarty led the SMU offense with six kills, while the SMU defense held Tulsa to a .146 attack percentage. Heise had eight digs in the set. Patterson assisted on 11 of SMU’s 12 kills, while Watts also added six digs.
SMU scored three straight points to win the second set 25-19. In the middle of the set and leading, 13-10, SMU went on a 5-2 run to go up 18-12 on the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa retaliated and cut the Mustangs’ lead to four, but the Mustangs bounced back to end the set with their late run. Hegarty led the offense with six kills, and Patterson assisted on 13 of SMU’s 19 kills. The Mustangs held the Golden Hurricane to a .231 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs return to Dallas to host Memphis in the final home match of the season Sunday, Nov. 20, at 1 p.m.
