SMU Volleyball: Mustangs Sweep Oral Roberts To Close Out Nike Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) – The Mustangs took a decisive 3-0 victory over Oral Roberts in their final match at the Nike Invitational Saturday night to improve to 1-2 on the season. Kelli Becerra posted the first double-double of the season for SMU with 35 assists and 11 digs.

The Mustangs broke the third set open midway through, taking a 15-10 lead and closed out the match with a 25-19 win. SMU committed just four errors with 14 kills and had a .800 side out percentage in the final set. Freshman Caroline Young had five of her 11 kills in the third set.

SMU took control of the match, edging out the Golden Eagles 29-27 in the first set. The Mustangs set the tone early, scoring 19 kills in the first set with a .204 attack percentage. Defensively, SMU scored with six blocks to escape with the opening set and a 1-0 advantage.

Dana Powell and Courtney Manning led the Mustangs to a 25-19 victory in the second set, setting up the match-clinching third set. Powell led SMU in the set with four kills, and Manning posted three blocks.

Powell finished the match with a team-high 12 kills and nine digs, and Jessica Oliver had 11 kills with four blocks. Manning finished with eight kills and five blocks. SMU had 11.0 blocks in the match all together.

SMU will return home to host the Doubletree Classic Sept. 2-3 in Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs open the tournament against TCU on Friday at 7 p.m. Alabama and Lamar will face off in the first match of the tournament Friday at 4:30 p.m.
