SMU W-Golf Places 5th At Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) – Alexandra Rossi posted a final round 68 with six birdies on Wednesday to help SMU finish fifth at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic hosted by Oklahoma.

Rossi birdied four of her first eight holes on Wednesday on her way to the second-lowest score of the round. The Austin, Texas, native rebounded from a difficult round of 83 on Wednesday. Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland makes sure that every tournament is a learning experience for the players, and she believes that her freshman will definitely take a lot away from this event.

“I think she’ll learn the most from this,” Sutherland said of Rossi, who finished tied for 13th overall. “Yesterday she lost her focus. The winds were tougher today, but she just focused on what she could handle and she played well.”

The Mustangs finished the first round in ninth place, moved to eighth after Tuesday, and finished in fifth, ahead of three teams ranked in GolfStat’s top-50.

“We played well today,” Sutherland said. “We have a lot to take away from this. We have to work on our putting and wedges and focus. We learned a lot about how to handle ourselves.”

Felicia Espericueta also had a strong final round, posting a 73, tying the second-best round by a Mustang at the event. Both Rossi and Jennifer Park scored first round 73’s.

Oklahoma played well enough in its home tournament to take home the team victory by 29 shots over Notre Dame. Sooners junior Chirapat Jao-Javanil took home individual medalist honors, finishing 7-under for the tournament after posting a final round score of 68.

SMU’s next event will take place Oct. 28-30 at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
