DALLAS (SMU) – SMU got four goals, including three from freshmen, as they rolled to a 4-0 victory over Sam Houston State at Westcott Field on Monday night. SMU is now 5-3-0, while Sam Houston State falls to 2-4-1.

Taylor Barg, Kelsey Gorney, Shelby Redman and Bari Kesner all tallied markers for the Mustangs. Barg got the scoring started quickly, earning her second of the season at the 7:29 mark of the game. Rikki Clarke crossed the ball low from the right side, finding a streaking Barg who redirected the ball past Bearkats goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton.

Gorney would add to the total just eight minutes later, scoring her fourth goal of 2013 off a header from the top-center of the box off a cross by Courtney Smith. The Mustangs had many scoring chances in the first half, outshooting the Bearkats 14-3. However, going into halftime SMU only had a two-goal edge.

Redman would give SMU a little more cushion less than 10 minutes into the second half, adding her sixth of the season on an unassisted effort that featured the junior making a move from right to left and sending a left-footed shot inside the far post from about 20 yards out.

Kesner would add the Mustangs’ fourth in the 79th minute, with assists to Barg and Smith. The goal was the first of Kesner’s career.

Lauryn Bodden earned the three-save shutout, the fifth of her career. SMU’s solid

performance could be seen on the final box score, with SMU outshooting the Bearkats 26-7 overall with 15 on goal, with 12 different Mustangs recording at least one shot. SMU also earned eight corner kicks to the Bearkats’ zero.

Smith’s two assists give her 24 for her career, tying her for eighth in SMU history and placing her seventh among all active NCAA players. Smith is currently tied for second in the NCAA with seven helpers in 2013.

Hambleton recorded 11 saves for Sam Houston State and Allie Johnson led the way with two shots.
