SMU W-Soccer Ties Colorado College

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs tied the Colorado College Tigers 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field after allowing two goals in one minute in the second half.

The Mustangs are now 5-5-2 (1-1-2 C-USA) on the season. Lissi Lonsberry appeared to score a game-winning goal in the second overtime after picking up a rebound off of a long shot from Mallory Baum, but Lonsberry was called offside after the ball hit the back of the net.

SMU started the scoring on the day, with Kenzie Scovill drawing a penalty kick at the 23:12 mark. Shelby Redman took the penalty kick and scored her sixth goal of the season. The Mustangs appeared to take control at the 40 minute mark after Briana Gaines scored her first goal of 2012. Gaines ran into the box and received a cross from Courtney Smith and proceeded to head the ball past Colorado College goalkeeper Kate Scheele.

Coming out of halftime, Colorado College picked up their pace and started applying significant pressure on SMU and freshman goalkeeper Shannon Moroney. The Tigers scored in the 69th minute when Brittney Lyman found Jaclyn Silsby running into the box and Silsby redirected the ball past Moroney from point-blank range. The Tigers weren’t done. Just 1:32 later, Jessie Ayers fired the ball past Moroney from outside the box at about 20 yards to tie the game at 2-2.

“They went down 2-0, and all of a suddent they started playing a lot harder,” Head Coach Chris Petrucelli said of the Tigers’ solid second half play. “They made it a lot more difficult for us.”

From the 70th minute through the end of the second overtime, the play was even, with both teams exchanging possession and runs. Overall, shots were almost even, with Colorado College outshooting SMU 11-10 for the contest.

“We knew it would be close,” Petrucelli said. “Both teams are capable of scoring. It was an even game.”

SMU will head back on the road for its next four games. First up is a trip to Southern Miss on Friday for a 4 p.m. affair. SMU is 5-1 all-time against Southern Miss, including a 3-1 win last season.
