SMU W-Tennis Continues To Dominate Blue & Red Challenge

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team tallied five total wins on the second day of the Blue & Red Challenge on Saturday afternoon at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs were paired with the South Alabama Jaguars in both singles and doubles on Saturday.

In doubles, SMU won three of its five matches.

Junior Hristina Dishkova and senior Holly Verner topped Laura Valkova and Emily Newton, 8-4. The duo of junior Yana Erkeeva and sophomore Mary Wright dominated Cinta Maria Papke and Laura Matuskova, 8-1. After a Friday loss, sophomores Anna Kate Anderson and Macie Elliott rebounded by earning an 8-6 decision over Paula Sanchez and Silvia Martinkova.

The tandem of junior Vaszilisza Bulgakova and sophomore Dasha Sharapova dropped a close 8-6 decision to Michaela Meszarosova and Mary Angela Martin, while Erkeeva and Wright fell to Cinta Maria Papke and Paula Sanchez in their second match of the day; 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

In singles action, Sharapova and Anderson notched wins for the Mustangs. Sharapova topped Emily Newton; 6-3, 6-0. Anderson used a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Martin; 6-4, 7-6 (6).

Dishkova, Elliott and Verner also competed in singles for SMU. Dishkova lost in three sets to Valkova; 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, Verner dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Meszarosova and Elliott fell to Matuskova; 6-2, 6-0.

The Blue & Red Challenge will conclude tomorrow, with play starting at 9 a.m. CT. This will be the final tournament of the fall for SMU.
