SMU W-Tennis Loses To ULM

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team dropped its second home match of the spring, 4-3, to ULM Friday afternoon at Turpin Stadium.

The Mustangs (16-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. In No. 1 doubles, Sarai Monarrez Yesaki and Ana Perez-Lopez defeated Stefana Andrei and Petra Horakova, 6-3. The duo picked up their 12th win of the spring and 16th overall. The Mustangs clinched the point in No. 2 doubles with Macie Elliott and Liza Buss picking up a 6-1 win against Karolina Snita and Madalina Grigoriu.

The Warhawks (13-1) claimed the lead after recording wins in No. 6 and No. 4 singles. Grigoriu won 6-2, 6-1 against Mary Wright and Horakova defeated Charline Anselmo 6-1, 6-3. On court No. 3, Sharapova tied the match at 2-2 after a 6-3, 6-4 win against Patricia Villar. With the win, Sharapova picked up her team-leading 23rd victory.

ULM took the lead with a win in No. 5 singles as Snita claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Elliott. The Mustangs came close to tying the match with Buss against Stefana Andrei in No. 1 singles. Andrei took the first set 6-4, but Buss forced a tiebreaker in the second set. However, Andrei won the tiebreaker (7-4) to clinch the match for the Warhawks.

Monarrez Yeskai notched her 19th win of the season in No. 2 singles as she served Tiffany Mylonas (11-1) her first loss of the season. The freshman dropped the first set 7-6 (7-4), but took the next two 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to give the Mustangs their third point.

SMU heads to the American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, which will be held at the USTA National Campus from April 19-22 in Orlando, Florida.
