SMU W-Tennis Opens New Facility

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team opened up the Blue & Red Challenge in dominating fashion on Friday afternoon at the new SMU Tennis Complex, as the Mustangs won seven of their nine matches.

“We played with a lot of pride,” said head coach Kati Gyulai. “We chased down a lot of balls and we won a lot of matches. Just a great effort, overall.”

SMU was paired with Wyoming on Friday in both singles and doubles.

In doubles, junior Hristina Dishkova and senior Holly Verner earned their tenth win of the fall season, defeating Christa Gecheva and Jessica Parizher, 8-3. Junior Vaszilisza Bulgakova and sophomore Dasha Sharapova earned an 8-6 victory over Dorottya Jonas and Magdalena Stencel, while junior Yana Erkeeva and sophomore Mary Wright topped Cecilia Mercier and Silviya Zhelyazkova, 8-3.

The Mustangs only doubles defeat came when sophomores Anna Kate Anderson and Macie Elliott lost a thrilling three-set match to Gecheva and Stencel; 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.

In singles, Dishkova defeated Jonas; 6-2, 6-4, Erkeeva notched a 7-5, 6-0 win over Zhelyazkova, Sharapova topped Parizher; 7-5, 6-1 and Wright defeated Mercier; 6-3, 6-2. Bulgakova nearly capped a perfect day in singles for the Mustangs, but ended up dropping a close match to Nastya Tokareva; 7-6, 7-5.

“I thought we did a great job with our attitude,” Gyulai said. “That’s what we ask from our players.”

Action will continue Saturday with play starting at 11 a.m. CT.
