SMU Whips Southern Mississippi

The SMU Mustangs beat the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles for the first time ever on Saturday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.  With the 34-6 victory, SMU improves to 5-5 on the season and 4-2 in the conference.  The Mustangs trail 6-0 Tulsa in the C-USA West.

SMU running back Zach Line rushed for 92 yards, giving him 1032 for the season.  Line becomes the second Mustang to rush for over 1000 yards in 3 straight seasons.  Line also scored a touchdown, tying him with Dupard for second-most in SMU history with 41.

Quarterback Garrett Gilbert rushed for 2 touchdowns and threw for another.  It is Gilberts, third straight game with 2 rushing touchdowns.  Gilbert completed 27 of 43 pass attempts for 249 yards.

Jeremy Johnson was the leading receiver for the Mustangs, catching 8 passes for 97 yards.  Der’rikk Thompson also hauled in 8 passes, for 66 yards.  Austin Fuller caught 7 for 59 yards.

Defensive back Jeremy Gray returned an interception 62 yards.  It was his first career interception.  SMU now has 18 interceptions on the season, the Mustangs entered the game tied for 1st in the nation in

takeaways, 2nd for interceptions.

Defensive lineman Aaron Davis blocked the Golden Eagles only extra point attempt, his 2nd blocked kick of the season.

The Mustangs travel to Houston to take on Rice next week.
