SMU Wins 84-65 At Southeast Missouri State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — Robert Nyakundi scored 29 points and London Giles 24 to lead SMU to an 84-65 victory over Southeast Missouri on Monday night. Nyakundi’s 29 points tied a career-high for the senior. Giles’ 24 points also set a career-high.

Each hit five 3-pointers for the Mustangs (6-4), who have won four of their last five. Jalen Jones added 11 points, and Leslee Smith had 12 rebounds.

Marland Smith’s 22 points led the Redhawks (4-7), who dropped their third straight. Tyler Stone had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Corey Wilford scored 11.

Southeast Missouri led 25-15 and was still up 33-31 with 3:09 to go, but SMU closed the first half on a 7-0 run.

The Redhawks climbed within 40-37 shortly after the break, but Nyakundi hit three 3-pointers and three free throws in a 15-3 run over the next 3 minutes for a 55-40 lead with 15:04 to go.

SMU outrebounded Southeast Missouri 38-32 and forced 16 turnovers while committing nine. The Mustangs als- had a season-high 12 steals.

SMU returns home for their next game, Thursday, Dec. 22, when they host Dallas Christian at Moody Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online at smumustangs.com/tickets.
