SMU Women Advance To Championship Game With 75-63 Win Over Cal State Fullerton

DALLAS (SMU) – Kristin Hernandez scored a season-high 14 points, and was one of four Mustangs in double-figures, to lead SMU to the championship game of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament with a 75-63 win over Cal State Fullerton in Moody Coliseum Friday night.

Sabrina McKinney scored a season-high 12 points, and Alisha Filmore and Akil Simpson each added 10. Filmore also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds to lead the Mustangs (4-1). Megan Richardson led Cal State Fullerton (3-1) with 20 points.

The Titans took a 7-2 lead three and a half minutes into the game, but the Mustangs went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 16-7 lead and never trailed again. SMU led by six at halftime, 36-30, but just over 11 minutes into the second half the Mustangs had stretched the lead to 21, 64-43 with 8:50 left in the game.

The Mustangs shot 52.0-percent from the field, eclipsing 50 percent for the second time this season, while holding the Titans to 38.7-percent. Simpson was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, and McKinney connected on all four of her field goals.

SMU will face Fresno State in the championship game of the Hoops for the Cure Tournament Saturday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs advanced with an 83-66 win over Tennessee State in the first round.
