SMU Women Defeat UCF

DALLAS (SMU) – Alicia Froling recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds, and her twin sister, Keely, added nine points and 10 rebounds to lead the SMU women’s basketball team to a 65-50 victory over UCF Saturday at Moody Coliseum.

With the game tied at 6-6 early in the first quarter, the Mustangs (10-12 overall, 5-6 against American Athletic Conference opponents) went on a 9-2 run to end the first 10 minutes of play with a 15-8 lead. Less than three minutes later, sophomore guard McKenzie Adams hit a three-pointer to push the SMU lead to 12, 23-11, with 7:19 left in the first half. The Knights (5-18, 2-10 The American) never got within 10 points the rest of the game.

Adams was one of three Mustangs in double figures, scoring 13 points, going 3-for-7 from behind the arc. Stephanie Collins scored 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting. SMU shot 37.9 percent from the field as a team, while holding UCF to just 31.7 percent. Kayla Thigpen led the Knights with 16 points, matching Froling for the game high. Zykira Lewis, who averaged 15.5 points entering the game, was held to just five points on 2-of-13 shooting.

In the second quarter, SMU again held the Knights to fewer than 10 points, outscoring UCF, 15-9, to take a 30-17 lead at halftime. The Mustangs scored 22 points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 20, 52-32, en route to the 15-point victory.
