SMU Women Lose To No. 1 UConn

STORRS, Conn. (SMU) – Keena Mays recorded 20 points and six rebounds, but No. 1 Connecticut held the Mustangs to 20 percent shooting from the field as the Huskies beat the Mustangs 102-41 at the Gampel Pavilion on Tuesday night.

Connecticut (24-0, 11-0 The American) remained undefeated with the win, while SMU dropped to 14-8 (5-6).

Mays, who won her fourth American Athletic Conference Player of the Week award on Monday, reached the 20-point plateau for the 12th time this season. The senior entered the night leading the league in scoring at 20.1 points per game. Kiara Perry led the Mustangs with seven rebounds, while Akil Simpson and Mays each had six. All six of Simpson’s rebounds came on the offensive end.

The Huskies opened the game on an 18-0 run through the first 5:49 of the game until Gabrielle Wilkins hit a pair of free throws to get SMU on the board. Over the course of the game, SMU was able to keep up with Connecticut in points off turnovers (15-13) and second-chance points (19-15), but the Huskies large advantage in points in the paint (46-12) proved to be vital. Both teams tallied 10 points from the charity stripe, but the Huskies added 12 three pointers on 20 attempts (60 percent), while SMU connected on just 3-of-19 attempts from deep.
