DALLAS (SMU) – Michelle Price got past the SMU defense to hit a layup with 10 seconds left in the game to put Wichita State up 61-59, ending SMU’s win streak at four games Saturday afternoon in Moody Coliseum. Destynee Hives-McCray had a chance to tie the game with 3.5 seconds left, but her shot on the front end of a one-and-one bounced off the rim. Akil Simpson tried to tip in the rebound, but couldn’t get it to go.

Simpson finished with her 12 career double-double and second of the season with 13 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Keena Mays had 16 points, scoring in double figures for the third time in as many games, matching Wichita State’s Jessica Diamond for the game high. Alisha Filmore added 11 points and matched her career high with eight rebounds for the Mustangs (8-3).

The Mustangs held the Shockers (6-5) to just 18 points in the first half, holding an opponent to less than 20 in a half for the fifth time this season. SMU shot 43.5 percent in the first 20 minutes to take a 31-18 lead at halftime, but the second half was a different story.

Wichita State scored 43 points on 18 field goals in the second half, the most points SMU has allowed in a half all season, and held the Mustangs to 11 field goals, including zero of four attempts from 3-point range, erasing what was once a 16-point SMU lead with 15:27 left in the game.

Darice Fountaine started the comeback effort for the Shockers, hitting a 3-pointer with 13:57 left to cut the lead to 13. Three Wichita State baskets later, the SMU lead was just six, 38-32 with 11:40 on the clock. Diamond hit a three for the Shockers to cut the lead to one with 7:33 left, and it was back and forth from then on. There were 11 lead changes and two ties in the last six minutes of the game, but Wichita State out-lasted the Mustangs.

SMU goes to San Diego, Calif., to take on San Diego State in the first round of the Surf ‘n Slam Classic Friday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs don’t have another home game until facing UCF in Moody Coliseum on Jan. 13 at 2 p.m.
