SMU Women Sweep UTPB

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team improved to 8-2 in dual matches this season after sweeping UT Permian Basin (1-6), 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the SMU Tennis Complex.

SMU grabbed the first point in the match after registering wins in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Liza Buss paired up with Dasha Sharapova to easily defeat UTPB’s Andrea Villalobos and Eugenia Sanchez, 6-1, while Macie Elliott and Ellie Zogg beat Krissy Chavez and Sofia Ochoa, 6-1. The Mustangs also picked up a victory in No. 3 doubles with Mary Wright and Sara Jamal earning a 6-2 victory against Paulina Obreque and Stephanie Prats.

In singles action, SMU extended its lead with Zogg and Elliott winning in the No. 5 and No. 4 slots, respectively. Zogg defeated Obreque, 6-0, 6-1, while Elliott pushed the Mustangs lead to 3-0 after a shutout (6-0, 6-0) against Chavez.

In No. 1 singles, Sarai Monarrez Yesaki won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 against Villalobos. Ana Perez-Lopez also won in straight sets with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Ochoa and Sharapova gave the Mustangs a 6-0 lead after a 6-0, 6-1 win against Sanchez.

Sara Jamal completed the sweep for the Mustangs as she recorded her first win in dual action this season. The freshman defeated Prats, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 6 singles.

SMU continues its homestand next weekend in its first conference match of the season against No. 46 UCF Saturday, March 4. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. CT at the SMU Tennis Complex.
