SMU’s Elliott Scores 1,000th Point Saturday Against Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. (SMU) – Christine Elliott scored her 1,000th point Saturday, leading the Mustangs with 13 points against Wichita State Saturday in her hometown of Wichita, Kan. The senior was six points away entering the contest, reaching the milestone three minutes into the game when she made a layup for her third field goal of the game.

Elliott finished the game 5-of-6 from the field and went 3-for-5 at the free throw line to become the 19th player in SMU history to score at least 1,000 points in a career. She now has 1,007 career-points, averaging 9.4 per game this season, but it was the Shockers (3-4) who were celebrating at the end, taking the victory behind a 17-point performance by Haleigh Lankster.

Elliott also grabbed four rebounds in the game and has 743 in her career. She became the seventh player in school history with at least 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in her career. She is seventh all-time at SMU in rebounds.

The Mustangs (4-4) pulled down 18 offensive rebounds, the second most in a game this season, led by freshman Destynee Hives-McCray who grabbed five offensive boards and a season-high six total rebounds. Sabrina McKinney was a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line to finish with six points, and Akil Simpson added six points with five rebounds.

The Mustangs return to Moody Coliseum Monday, opening a six-game homestand against Northwestern State at 7 p.m. The SMU women’s basketball program has never faced the Demons.
